Lakeshore Trail Trailhead

The Lakeshore Trail Trailhead in Bryson City offers experienced hikers a challenging 33-mile point-to-point adventure through the diverse terrain of the Great Smoky Mountains. This historic trail follows the northern shore of Fontana Lake, winding through dense forest and passing remnants of old homesteads that tell stories of communities that existed before the creation of the lake.

Starting from the Road to Nowhere tunnel in Bryson City, the trail maintains a moderate elevation between 1,700 and 2,800 feet, making it accessible year-round. Hikers encounter a mix of terrain including rocky sections, stream crossings, and well-maintained dirt paths. Multiple backcountry campsites along the route allow for multi-day hiking experiences, though permits are required for overnight stays.

The trail rewards hikers with seasonal wildflower displays in spring, abundant wildlife viewing opportunities, and occasional glimpses of Fontana Lake through the trees. Fall brings spectacular color changes, while summer offers cool refuge under the dense forest canopy. The western section tends to be less trafficked, providing a more secluded experience.

Pack plenty of water and supplies, as the trail has limited access points once you begin. The eastern terminus at Fontana Dam makes for a logical endpoint, but you'll need to arrange transportation back to Bryson City. While experienced hikers can complete the trail in 2-3 days, many choose to break it into smaller sections for day hikes.

The trailhead parking area is free and accessible year-round, with space for about 20 vehicles. Early morning starts are recommended, especially during peak summer months.
