Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Bryson City from Gatlinburg?
About 70 miles via US-441 through the park (about 2 hours). Via I-40, it's about 90 miles and 1.5 hours. Both routes are scenic.
When is the best time for rafting?
The Nantahala River has consistent water levels from April through October, but summer (June-August) is peak season. Water is cold year-round (about 45-50°F) since it's dam-released.
Are the Polar Express trains worth it?
They sell out for a reason—it's a magical experience for kids. Trains run November-December. Book as early as possible (tickets usually go on sale in late summer).
What is the Road to Nowhere?
It's a 6-mile road into the park built in the 1960s that abruptly ends at a 1,200-foot tunnel. The government planned a road but stopped construction. It's now a popular spot for hiking, biking, and exploring the tunnel.
