About Smoky Mountain Outdoors (SMO) Rafting

SMO runs the longest Upper Pigeon trip at 6.5 miles, which gives you more bang for your buck than the competition. We've done their Extreme Upper in those smaller rafts and wow — only 3 people plus your guide, so you hit every wave harder and can actually surf some of the hydraulics. Fair warning though: you need to know how to swim well and have some rafting experience under your belt.

The regular Upper Pigeon delivers solid Class III-IV rapids from Memorial Day through Labor Day when they guarantee water releases from the dam. Spring and fall are hit-or-miss — we've shown up after dry spells to what was basically a scenic float instead of whitewater.

Their Hartford outpost sits right off I-40 at Exit 447, about 45 minutes from Gatlinburg. Don't make the mistake of going to their offices in town — everything launches from Hartford. The shuttles handle all the logistics, which is nice when you're trying to wrangle a group.

Book ahead and get there 30 minutes early for check-in. The Lower Pigeon is perfect if you've got kids as young as 3, and honestly the water fights between rafts are half the fun. One thing we learned: check the weather a day or two before your trip — high water after rain makes the Upper Pigeon way more intense than usual.
