About Tennessee Welcome Center

You'll hit this welcome center about three miles into Tennessee coming from North Carolina on I-40, and it's actually worth the stop. The log cabin building with rocking chairs on the porch feels more like visiting someone's mountain home than your typical highway rest stop. We've grabbed those chairs a few times just to decompress after the winding drive through the mountains — the views aren't bad either.

The staff inside knows their stuff about the Smokies and local attractions. They've got stacks of current brochures and can tell you which trails are open or if there's construction on the roads you're planning to take. One time they saved us from driving to a waterfall that was closed for repairs.

Parking's easy with plenty of space for RVs, but heads up — there's a 2-hour limit so don't plan on camping here overnight. The restrooms are open 24/7 though, which is clutch for those late-night drives.

One thing that surprised us was how quiet it feels despite being right off the interstate. The building sits up on a little hill, so you get that mountain atmosphere without the highway noise once you're on the porch. Tennessee's trying to renovate their welcome centers statewide, so this place might look different next time you visit.
