TSM Quick Take

Worth it for you?

Ober Mountain is a good fit for families and groups looking for a mix of mountain views, scenic rides like the Gatlinburg Tram, and a variety of approachable activities ranging from the Smoky Mountain Bobsled to indoor ice skating and bumper cars. The attraction offers enough variety for both younger kids and teens, and adults can enjoy the scenery, observation decks, and some moderate thrill rides. Most visitors spend a half-day or more if using a multi-attraction pass, and the indoor ice rink provides a backup option in poor weather.

The main objection is cost: passes and à la carte tickets add up quickly, especially for larger families, and the experience is more modest than major theme parks. Some attractions are weather-dependent, and those with a fear of heights may find the Tram or chairlifts uncomfortable. Expect moderate crowds during peak seasons and check the official site for current pricing and weather advisories.

Tickets

Ticket Strategy

Ticket options range from single Tram rides to multi-attraction passes; confirm current pricing and inclusions on the official site before buying.

Single ticket

Single Tram or attraction tickets typically run in the low-$40s for adults; best if you only want the Tram or a single activity.

Combo pass

Add-ons

The Fun Pass (spring special) includes several mountaintop activities and is a better value if you plan to do 3 or more attractions; online purchase is usually cheaper than buying on-site.

Prices and pass contents change — always check the official Ober Mountain ticketing page before purchasing.

About Ober Mountain

Ober Mountain is Tennessee's only ski area, which honestly surprised us the first time we visited — you don't think "skiing" when you think Tennessee. The tram ride up from downtown Gatlinburg is half the experience, giving you those classic Smoky Mountain views before you even get to the attractions. We've been up there in both summer and winter, and it's like two completely different parks.

Winter's when this place really shines if you're into snow sports. They've got 10 trails across 38 acres, and the longest run is nearly a mile — not Colorado, but pretty decent for the Southeast. The snow tubing is what our kids always want to do first, though fair warning: you'll need a lift ticket for most slope activities even if you're not actually skiing. That caught us off guard our first winter visit.

Oh and the Tennessee Flyer mountain coaster runs year-round, which is great because the zip lines shut down in colder months. The ice bumper cars are a weird addition but the kids love them.

One thing though — check their slope report before you go in winter. Conditions change daily and nothing's worse than planning a ski day only to find half the trails are closed. We learned that lesson the hard way on a January trip when it was 55 degrees and raining.

The Spring Fling event in March looks fun if you're into pond skimming and don't mind dressing up in costume. It's $131 for the two-day pass, which includes lift access, but honestly we've never made it up there for the events — too much chaos with the crowds.

Insider Tips for Ober Mountain

Insider tips

Check which attractions are open before you go, because several activities are seasonal and weather-dependent, especially snow sports and some outdoor rides. If you are driving, leave extra time for Ski Mountain Road. It is steep and winding, and winter conditions can make it slower and more difficult.

The tramway and the mountaintop park are in different places, so make sure you know whether you are starting downtown or going straight to the top by car.

When is the best time to visit?

For smaller crowds, go on a weekday and arrive earlier in the day. Winter is best for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, while spring through fall is better for mountain coasters, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor attractions.

How do you get there, and is parking available?

You can reach Ober Mountain by taking the Aerial Tramway from downtown Gatlinburg or by driving up Ski Mountain Road. On-site parking is available for drivers, but it can fill up during busy periods.

What should I expect once I’m there?

Ober Mountain is a year-round mountain attraction with a mix of rides, scenic views, wildlife, ice skating, mountain coasters, and seasonal snow sports. It also has a downtown tramway location separate from the mountaintop park.

Who is Ober Mountain best for?

It works well for families, mixed-age groups, and visitors who want both sightseeing and activities. Kids usually like the carousel, jump pillow, and bumper cars, while older kids and adults often go for the coaster, tram, ski runs, or zipline-style activities.
