About Gatlinburg SkyLift Park
The chairlift ride up to SkyLift Park is half the fun — 10 minutes of slowly ascending 500 feet while downtown Gatlinburg shrinks below you. We always spot people pointing at our yellow chairs from the street, and honestly, the anticipation builds the whole way up. Once you reach the top, that 680-foot suspension bridge hits you immediately, and those glass floor panels in the middle will test even the bravest visitors.
The SkyBridge is North America's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, which sounds impressive until you're actually standing on it looking down 140 feet into the forest canopy. Our kids love it, but I'll admit those glass sections make my stomach drop every time. The views of Mt. LeConte and the Smokies peaks from up there are incredible though, especially at sunset when the whole valley glows.
They've added this whole new trail system — 1.5 miles of hiking paths and that elevated SkyTrail boardwalk that connects to Tulip Tower with rope bridges. The boardwalk part is wheelchair accessible, which is nice, but the full trail gets into some hillside terrain where you might spot black bears. We usually grab smash burgers at Clayton's Landing when we first get to the summit because the trails work up an appetite.
Go early if you can — we learned this the hard way after waiting 45 minutes in line during a busy July weekend. The park opens at 9 AM and those first few hours are so much better for photos and just enjoying the experience without crowds pushing behind you on the bridge. Local tip: if you're from Sevier or Cocke County, bring your ID in January for those $5 local days.
