Cherohala Skyway - landmark

The Cherohala Skyway stands as one of North Carolina's most impressive scenic byways, stretching 43 miles from Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN. This National Scenic Byway climbs from 900 feet to over 5,400 feet above sea level, offering dramatic views of the Appalachian Mountains and Cherokee National Forest along its winding path.

Motorcyclists particularly love the Skyway's smooth pavement and sweeping curves, while outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the numerous hiking trails and picnic areas scattered along the route. Several well-marked overlooks provide ideal spots for photography and wildlife viewing, though some viewpoints on the North Carolina side currently face maintenance challenges with overgrown vegetation.

The drive typically takes about 2-3 hours if you're stopping at overlooks, longer if you're planning to hike. Pack accordingly - there are no gas stations or restaurants along the main stretch. The elevation change means temperatures can be 10-15 degrees cooler at the highest points, so bring layers even in summer.

For hikers, multiple trailheads connect to the Benton MacKaye Trail and other local paths. Indian Boundary Recreation Area, just off the Skyway, offers camping, swimming, and additional hiking opportunities. The road is open year-round and free to access, though winter conditions can be challenging and occasionally lead to closures.

Best times to visit are during spring wildflower season and fall color changes, typically October. Early mornings often provide clearer mountain views before afternoon haze sets in. Consider starting from the Robbinsville side to experience the most dramatic elevation changes and views as you ascend.
