Carver's Orchard & Applehouse Restaurant

We stumbled across Carver's during apple season a few years back, and honestly, it's become our go-to spot when we want to escape the Gatlinburg crowds. The drive to Cosby takes about 20 minutes from downtown, but you're trading tourist chaos for mountain views and apple trees as far as you can see. Fair warning though — they're seasonal only now, so don't show up expecting dinner in March like we did last time.

The restaurant sits right in the middle of their 75-acre orchard with over 40,000 apple trees. Every entree comes with apple cider, hot apple fritters, and apple butter, which sounds gimmicky but actually works. We always get the chicken and dumplings or the catfish — both run around $10 and come with enough food that our kids split one plate between them.

Oh and the country store attached to the restaurant? Skip the touristy stuff and head straight for their apple cider at $8 per jug. They've got 120+ apple varieties, plus all the usual mountain goodies like hand-dipped chocolates and Amish popcorn. The kids always beg for caramel apples, but honestly the fresh unwaxed apples taste better than anything you'll find in town.

One thing though — parking fills up fast during peak fall weekends, and service can get overwhelmed when they're slammed. We've learned to arrive before 11:30 or after 2:00 to avoid the worst crowds. The covered porch has swings where kids can wait it out, but patience helps during apple season.
