Big Boys Country Kitchen

Big Boys Country Kitchen sits right off I-40 at Exit 435, and we've stopped here more times than I can count when driving through Newport. The buffet changes daily — one day you'll get pinto beans and cornbread, the next it's meatloaf and collard greens — but the fried chicken shows up pretty regularly. There's also a full menu if the buffet looks picked over, which happens sometimes during the Sunday rush when half of East Tennessee seems to roll through.

The place is nothing fancy. Just booths, tables, and a straightforward buffet setup with a salad bar and ice cream station. Service can be hit or miss — we've had servers who barely acknowledged us and others who treated us like family. If you need sweet tea right away (diabetic thing), speak up immediately because getting their attention during busy periods takes patience.

Sunday around 12:30 is a zoo. All the tourists heading to Gatlinburg pile in here, and the buffet gets demolished pretty quick. We've learned to either hit it early morning or wait until mid-afternoon if we're passing through on weekends.

For $10-20 per person, you're getting honest Southern food — not Instagram-worthy, just filling. The cornbread's always good, and when the fried chicken's fresh, it's solid. Don't expect gourmet anything, but if you want comfort food without the tourist markup you'll find in Gatlinburg, this does the job.
