The North Carolina side of the Smokies gets a fraction of the webcam coverage that Tennessee does — but there are four cams worth knowing about, especially if you're planning a trip to Cherokee or Bryson City.

For the Tennessee side, see our Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge webcam pages. For inside the park itself, see GSMNP webcams.

Purchase Knob (NPS — NC side of the park)

Purchase Knob is the only official NPS webcam pointed at the southern half of the park. Sits at 5,000 ft on the NC side, looking out over the Maggie Valley area and the Plott Balsams.

Bryson City Town Square

The Swain County Chamber runs a downtown cam showing the historic town square — the most "small mountain town" view of any cam in the region. Best for checking conditions on a Polar Express weekend.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad — Bryson City Depot

Three cam views of the GSMR depot in downtown Bryson City — the historic 1895 train station, the platform, and the rail yard. Most active on operating days (typically weekends + Polar Express season Nov-Dec).

Nantahala Outdoor Center (Nantahala Gorge)

NOC's cam shows the Nantahala River put-in area — the most popular Class II/III rafting spot in the Smokies. Useful for checking the put-in chaos on a busy summer Saturday.

What's missing on the NC side

A few things to be aware of:

  • No Cherokee, NC town webcam. Aggregator sites sometimes list one — those are placeholders. Best you can do for current Cherokee conditions is the Purchase Knob NPS cam above.
  • No Maggie Valley webcam at the moment. Purchase Knob is the closest official cam.
  • No Cataloochee Valley elk cam — surprising given how many people search for one. The valley itself has poor cell signal so a live feed would be hard to operate.

Tips for using these cams

  • For weather: Purchase Knob is your best bet for NC-side conditions. If it's clear there, the Blue Ridge Parkway drive will be too.
  • For railroad season: The GSMR cams are most interesting Nov-Dec during Polar Express season — the depot is fully decorated.
  • For rafting: NOC's cam is your real-time check on river crowding before you commit to driving an hour to the put-in.
