About TVA Fontana Dam Visitors Center
The TVA Fontana Dam Visitors Center offers the perfect introduction to America's tallest dam east of the Rockies. Standing 480 feet high, Fontana Dam impresses from every angle, and the visitor center provides the best starting point for exploring this engineering marvel.
Inside, retired TVA employees often serve as volunteer guides, sharing firsthand stories about the dam's construction during World War II and its crucial role in powering aluminum production for the war effort. The center features educational exhibits and informative videos about the dam's history and ongoing hydroelectric operations.
The highlight for many visitors is walking across the dam itself, which doubles as part of the Appalachian Trail. The half-mile walk delivers panoramic views of Fontana Lake and the surrounding mountains. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes - the exposed concrete surface can get hot in summer months.
For the full experience, drive to the base viewing area (3 miles west on Highway 28, right at the TVA sign) to appreciate the dam's massive scale from below. The visitor center provides clean restrooms and drinking water, though the small gift shop has limited offerings.
Important planning note: The visitor center operates seasonally, closing completely from November through March. While the dam itself and parking areas remain accessible year-round, winter visitors won't have access to exhibits or facilities. During open season, arrive early to catch the morning light on the lake and avoid afternoon heat. The center and all viewing areas are free to visit.

Don't Miss
Walking Across the Dam on the Appalachian Trail
You're literally walking on the Appalachian Trail as you cross the 2,365-foot-long dam top. The views of Fontana Lake stretching into the Great Smoky Mountains are incredible. It's one of the most unique AT experiences you can have without serious hiking.
TVA History Exhibits with Volunteer Guides
The retired TVA employees who volunteer here are amazing storytellers. They share fascinating details about the WWII construction, the families displaced by the lake, and how this dam powered aluminum plants for the war effort. Their passion really brings the history alive.
Base of Dam Viewing Area
Drive about 3 miles west and turn at the TVA sign to see the dam from below. The 480-foot concrete wall is absolutely massive from this angle - photos don't do it justice. You can also see the powerhouse and Little Tennessee River.
Fontana Lake Overlook Views
From the visitor center and dam top, you get sweeping views of the 10,500-acre lake backed by the Smokies. Early morning and late afternoon light make the water and mountains absolutely stunning. Bring a camera for sure.
Free Dam Trading Cards
TVA gives out free trading cards featuring artwork of their various dams. The volunteers told us to 'take a pack' - they're a fun free souvenir that kids especially love collecting. Ask at the visitor center desk.
Fontana Hilton Hiker Shelter
The nearby AT shelter with showers is legendary among thru-hikers as the 'Fontana Hilton.' Even if you're not hiking, it's interesting to see this well-known trail landmark. The showers are open year-round for hikers.
