About The Old Mill Pottery House Café
We stumbled on this place by accident our first time in the Old Mill area and it's become our go-to when we want good Southern food without the crazy waits at the main Old Mill Restaurant. They serve everything on actual handmade pottery plates from local clay, which sounds gimmicky but honestly makes the meal feel special. The bread basket alone is worth the trip — they bake sourdough and onion-rye daily using grains ground right next door at the Old Mill.
The restaurant sits in what used to be the potter's house from 1954, so you're literally eating where the Ferguson family lived and worked for decades. There's a big stone fireplace inside that makes it cozy in winter, plus they've added these heated igloos on the outdoor patio that are actually pretty cool when it's cold out.
No reservations though, which can bite you on Friday and Saturday nights. We learned to hit them for lunch on weekdays or weekend brunch instead — way shorter waits and you still get the same shrimp and grits that everyone raves about.
One thing that surprised us: the portions are huge. We always end up taking half our meal home, which actually makes the prices more reasonable than they first look. The kids' menu is solid too, not just chicken nuggets and fries like some places.
Park in the Old Mill Square lot — it's free for diners but fills up fast after 4pm. You can walk to everything else from there: the pottery shop, creamery, even down to the river behind the mill. Just don't expect to get seated right away if you show up during peak dinner hours without a backup plan.
